Crucial conversations – Tools for talking when the stakes are high by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan and Al Swizler. Summarised by Paul Arnold (Facilitator and Trainer)

Many ‘defining’ moments in life come from having crucial conversations (as these create significant shifts in attitude and behaviour). This book focuses on techniques on how to hold such conversations in a positive space when surrounded by highly charged emotions. Their findings are based on 25 years of research with 20,000 people.

Their model has essentially 7 steps:

1)  Start with the heart (i.e empathy and positive intent)

2)  Stay in dialogue

3)  Make it safe

4)  Don’t get hooked by emotion (or hook them)

5)  Agree a mutual purpose

6)  Separate facts from story

7)  Agree a clear action plan

Tourism – Johnny Cash Style

SBI: A Thinning Crowd

There are times when we like to act like tourists in our own town and go to places that locals tend to ignore. Sunday was one of those times. We had brunch in downtown Nashville and walked a few blocks to the Johnny Cash Museum.Johnny Cash

I never saw Johnny Cash perform, and that is one of my regrets. However, I had a brief encounter with him at a bookstore. Honestly, I thought that would have been mentioned somewhere in the museum, but, for some reason, they left that out.

The museum offered glimpses into many phases of his life. Throughout the tour, samples of his music play overhead. Also, there are listening stations that represent different musical times in his life. It is a great chance to hear how his music, message and voice changed through the decades.

When I picked up one set of headphones, the station played a…

Philadelphia radio personality Mike Missanelli gloats over Victor Cruz injury

The 4519 - NFL Rumors, Gossip, Blogs, News, Discussion

Mike Missanelli of 95.7 The Fanatic in Philly couldn’t contain his delight after watching Giants receiver Victor Cruz go down with a torn patellar tendon.

Cruz could be seen crying as he was carted off the field but that human moment didn’t touch Missanelli who only cared about gloating over the physically injured and emotionally devastated Cruz.

That’s about the level of compassion you would expect from a radio host on a station called 95.7 The Fanatic in Philadelphia.

Great job Mike Missanelli. You really are a credit to your profession and your city.

Update: Missanelli deleted the tweet (screencapped above) and tried claim he didn’t know Cruz was hurt.

Fans flood London’s Regent Street for NFL festival

Thousands of football fans thronged one of Europe’s largest shopping districts, which was closed off for the event. Instead of designer clothing worn out of high-end stores, a sea of NFL jerseys inundated the half-mile stretch of road. In fact, in just a short time, it was possible to see fans wearing gear from all 32 NFL teams.

Those fans entertained themselves by throwing, catching and kicking footballs at NFL Experience stations dotted along the street. Younger British children tried their hand at playing football for the first time, while Raiderette cheerleaders showing off their moves halted traffic entirely. The main draw for the fans was the NFL stage, which featured interviews with a handful of Hall of Famers, including Rod Woodson, Bob Griese and Fred Biletnikoff, some of the stars from both teams playing at Wembley and a surprise guest in the form of former Miami quarterback Dan…

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the NFL has started to inform players who have satisfied the terms of their current suspensions under the league’s new proposed drug policy that they should be reinstated by Sunday, a sign that the new policy will surely be in place by then. This means that Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick and Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker, who were serving four-game suspensions for positive amphetamine tests, will have their suspensions cut in half.

In addition, Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon, currently serving a season-long suspension for multiple violations of the league’s drug and alcohol policies, will have his suspension reduced to 10 games, and he’s already served two.

The primary point in the new drug policy is the addition of testing for Human Growth Hormone, which the NFLPA has been resisting since the current collective bargaining agreement was ratified in 2011. The…

Hearst Castle

Day 6!

We’re almost to the end of my photos from the trip. Hope you enjoyed looking through the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. 🙂

Jay and I drove to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Calif., Wednesday morning for a tour. The castle, also known as “La Cuesta Encantada” (Enchanted hill) was built by William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951), newspaper magnate and publisher.

The estate is more than 90,000 square feet. There are a total of 56 bedrooms, 41 fireplaces and 61 bathrooms including the three guest houses and the main house.

Pictured above on the left is a sitting area in the assembly room in the main house, Casa Grande. Hearst and his architect Julia Morgan worked on the castle from 1919 to 1947. When Hearst died in 1951, the Hearst corporation donated the property to the state and it is now maintained as a California…
